Tesla Boombox turned out to be a fun addition to our festival tailgate. We used it while parked, with the rear trunk open as our hangout area and the frunk holding ice and drinks. The music was just loud enough for us around the car without feeling too loud.
Our overall impression was positive, with one clear drawback: Boombox did not sound as good as the regular Tesla speakers, especially when it came to bass. For casual listening around the car, though, we liked it.
Tesla Boombox: the short version
Enough around our car
We enjoyed music in our immediate hangout area without it feeling overpowering.
Less bass and fullness
We preferred the regular cabin speakers for sound quality.
Casual parked listening
Useful for our tailgate, with expectations adjusted for the external hardware.
What actually produces the Boombox sound?
Tesla’s Boombox instructions describe playing audio through the external Pedestrian Warning System speaker while the vehicle is in Park. Depending on the equipped vehicle and current software, the menu supports current media, Megaphone and compatible USB sounds.
The hardware location matters. Tesla’s 2025+ Model Y service procedure identifies a separate PWS unit on the front-fascia valance. Opening the rear hatch does not move that speaker to the trunk or route the full cabin speaker array outside. Our open trunk was the gathering area, rather than the source of Boombox audio.
Boombox vs. the cabin audio system: verified specs
We wanted a useful hardware comparison, but Tesla does not provide every audio measurement in the official material reviewed. The table separates documented equipment from specifications we could not verify.
| Specification | Boombox / external PWS | Model Y cabin audio |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Separate front-mounted external PWS speaker. | Multiple interior speakers, with a separate subwoofer and amplifier documented for equipped configurations. |
| Published speaker count | No count for a separate outdoor music array specified in the reviewed documentation. | Tesla’s refreshed Model Y launch presentation lists 15 speakers plus 1 subwoofer; the previous Model Y comparison lists 13 speakers plus 1 subwoofer. |
| Driver details | Driver dimensions not specified in the reviewed official documentation. | The 2025+ service documentation includes 100 mm and 60 mm full-range drivers and a 25 mm active tweeter. Those procedure titles do not establish quantities or the exact equipment in every vehicle. |
| Dedicated subwoofer | Not specified for Boombox in the reviewed official documentation. | A separate subwoofer assembly and amplifier are documented for equipped vehicles. |
| Watts, frequency response and maximum sound level | Not specified in the reviewed official documentation. | Comparable verified power, frequency-response and maximum-SPL figures were not established from the reviewed official documentation. |
Driver and component references come from the audio section of Tesla’s 2025+ service manual, including its active-tweeter and subwoofer procedures.

Why the cabin sounds fuller to us
Boombox did not sound as good to us, and weaker bass was the most noticeable difference. The cabin system had the sound we preferred; outside, music remained enjoyable but lost fullness.
The documented architecture offers a reasonable explanation. A dedicated bass driver and multiple speakers distributed around an enclosed listening space provide different acoustic possibilities from an external PWS unit playing into open air. That is an inference from the design, rather than a measured frequency-response comparison or proof of a particular bass cutoff.
Cabin tuning also offers more control. Tesla’s media and audio guidance describes subwoofer level, Bass, Bass/Mid, Mid, Mid/Treble and Treble controls, plus balance and Immersive Sound with premium audio. Available settings vary by configuration. We have not established that these controls process the external Boombox output identically, so do not assume increasing cabin bass turns the PWS unit into a subwoofer-equipped system.
Our festival tailgate setup
1. Boombox supplied the music
We played music while hanging out around the Tesla. The volume suited our immediate area. We were not testing maximum output or trying to reach people across the festival.
2. The rear trunk became our hangout area
We kept the trunk open and used that space for our tailgate. Music outside the car helped bring the setup together instead of keeping listening inside the cabin.
3. The frunk held ice and drinks
We also used the frunk as a cooler with ice and drinks. This describes our setup, rather than a recommendation to put loose ice directly into a vehicle’s storage compartment.
What to expect when trying Boombox
- Start while parked. On an equipped vehicle, open Toybox, choose Boombox and select the current-media option. Check the current on-screen controls and Tesla’s instructions for your software.
- Listen from your gathering spot. The front-mounted source and your position around the car affect the listening arrangement. Our experience around the parked car is not a measurement of its range.
- Keep the goal realistic. We liked the volume balance for our group. We would not use that subjective impression to promise party-speaker output, strong bass or uniform sound around the whole vehicle.
- Consider the people nearby. Keep volume appropriate for the setting and follow the venue’s rules for amplified music.
Four accessories for a trunk, frunk or tailgate setup
Our Model Y Juniper accessories guide includes the bumper guard below. The other three products are researched suggestions, not gear we are claiming to have used at the festival.
The cooler, organizer and table are general portable products. Their fit in a Model Y Juniper trunk or frunk has not been verified: measure your available space and check lid and hatch clearance before ordering.

Coleman Chiller 16-Quart Portable Cooler
An insulated body and carrying handle keep drinks in a dedicated, portable container. Check available space and lid clearance before considering it for the frunk; fit is not verified.
Homeve Collapsible Trunk Organizer
Divided storage, exterior pockets and handles help group napkins, snacks and supplies. It folds away when needed. Measure the cargo area, and do not treat it as a sealed cooler or loose-ice container.
Coleman Outdoor Compact Folding Table
A roll-up aluminum top, steel frame and carrying bag provide a freestanding surface beside the car. This is not a Tesla-mounted accessory; use level space and follow the venue’s setup rules.
LUCKEASY Rear Bumper Guard
This remains our separate trunk-area recommendation. Our existing guide notes that it can come off when accessing the compartment below the trunk. Check compatibility with your exact vehicle; we are not claiming festival testing.

Final verdict: fun for casual tailgating
We liked using Tesla Boombox at the festival. It was loud enough for us around the parked car and worked well with our open-trunk hangout area. The weaker bass and lower sound quality did not spoil that experience.
The useful distinction is hardware and purpose: external audio for nearby listening, alongside a cabin system we preferred for fuller sound. Go in with those expectations and Boombox can be a fun feature to try.

Its external audio uses the PWS speaker. It is separate from the cabin array.
How many watts is Boombox?
We could not verify a wattage, frequency response or maximum-SPL rating in the reviewed official documentation.
Does every Model Y have 15 cabin speakers?
No universal count is established here. The launch-era figure should not be applied automatically across different trims, markets and builds.
